Description:
Cut of a large, relatively shallow, pit in the western side of the trench, disappearing into the western section (which will provide a great section through the pit and its fills). The northern and southern sides of the cut are relatively gentle, almost flat where they reached the base of the plough zone, which made them quite difficult to define. The surface of the pit was originally delineated by the partially exposed upper layer of pot/brick/stone, which proved to be a poor guide to the pit's extent (p8). The cut was only definable through excavation. The eastern side of the pit is steeper, but still far from vertical. Infant grave cut [A-014] is cut into the upper part of the eastern section, demonstrating that the pit pre-dates the phase of infant burials. The cut flattens at the base, but has one small deeper section at the northern end. This deeper hole appears to be where the cut has intruded into a significantly softer underlying deposit. The purpose of this rather shallow scrape of a pit remains unclear.
